Lesson 1

In the first lesson we began to start thinking about the characters that we were going to use and which member of the group would fit well with each character. After we figured out all the characters we started to brainstorm ideas for the story of the play. Overall we chose 9 characters which meant that 2 members in the group had to play 2 characters with was Ned and myself. The idea that the group thought would go well was having the first few scenes in a restaurant which would feature il capitano, arlecchino and would later end up featuring characters such as brighella and isabella.

The Lemonade Stand

The Lemonade Stand is about a boy called Benny and his grandfather who has not changed socks since he was a kid. They ran a lemonade stand outside of their house and it was very successful. I enjoyed this short film as it was interesting and funny to watch. The different character used and the stories behind them made the film very interesting to watch. At the end of the film the grandfather washed his 70 year old socks into a glass and then the man who allegedly worked for the council drank the glass full of sock juice. Benny and his grandfather later found out that the man did not work for the council and just wanted to be friends with them. This short film was enjoyable as it had a twist at the end which changed my perspective of the film.

Porcelain Unicorn Reflection

  1. 12 shots were used in the opening scene to give a good sense of the character and the setting that it was in. Using 12 shots gives us more detail than just a few shots.
  2. These shots create expectation for the audience as we are learning about the setting and what the character looks like which can give us expectation about the character.
  3. In the short film they use many different camera angles and one of the main camera angles shown is a low angle shot. A low angle shot is shown when the soldiers come in trying to look for the children. Having a low angle shot when the soldiers walk in gives them a sense of dominance and power.
  4. The point of view shot is used for one of the young boys when he sees the soldiers come in. It shows from his angle of hiding down low and the soldiers walking around. Again this gives the soldiers dominance as the young boys do not want to get caught and are frightened. This has an effect on the audience as a point of view shot makes it feel like you are in the characters position.
  5. It is important for film makers to use different camera angles when shooting as it makes the scene more interesting for the audience and creates tension. It is not very interesting just watching a scene with one camera angle as it is in the same position the whole time and it is more engaging to add more shots.

Stephen Spielberg Reflection

Stephen Spielberg is a world class film director and to be world class he has to use many special techniques and methods. In most of Stephen Spielberg’s films he is using suspense and this is shown by his special way of only showing specific parts of the character and not the whole characters body. Spielberg strongly believes in the film technique of showing not telling as he likes to show what is happening through the characters body and not the character saying what is happening. He uses 2 main techniques to introduce his characters which are fraction and action. The action part consists of the characters personality and moral values. Fraction is only showing a part of a character and not the full body. By using fraction it makes the audience more engaged and more interested to see what is going to happen next.
